GlossaryVan Trailer

Dry Van

A dry van is an enclosed trailer used to haul general freight that does not need temperature control.

What you actually need to know

Dry van is one of the most common equipment types for new owner-operators because freight is broad and setup is simpler than reefer or flatbed.

Common freight includes retail goods, packaged food, paper products, consumer goods, and general warehouse freight. Rates vary heavily by lane and market.

Dry van still needs cargo insurance, clean broker setup, and careful load selection. Simple equipment does not mean no risk.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • Dry van is not the same as box truck.
  • General freight can still have special requirements.
  • Low equipment complexity does not guarantee profit.
