GlossaryRefrigerated Trailer

Reefer

A reefer is a refrigerated trailer used to haul temperature-controlled freight.

What you actually need to know

Reefer freight can pay differently than dry van because cargo often needs temperature monitoring, fuel for the trailer unit, and stricter appointment times.

Insurance and broker setup may ask whether you haul refrigerated food, produce, medicine, or other temperature-sensitive freight.

New carriers should understand reefer fuel, temperature records, washouts, claims risk, and detention before choosing this equipment type.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • Reefer freight is not always better-paying after costs.
  • The trailer unit uses fuel and needs maintenance.
  • Temperature claims can be expensive.
