GlossaryFlatbed Trailer

Flatbed

A flatbed is an open-deck trailer used for freight that is too large, heavy, or awkward for an enclosed trailer.

What you actually need to know

Flatbed can create strong opportunities, but it comes with securement skill, tarping labor, weather exposure, and higher claims risk if freight is not protected.

Brokers and shippers may expect straps, chains, binders, tarps, edge protectors, and securement knowledge. New carriers should train before accepting specialized loads.

Flatbed operations may affect insurance, lanes, equipment costs, and driver workload. Do not choose it only because a posted rate looks attractive.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • Flatbed is not beginner-proof.
  • Load securement is a safety and compliance issue.
  • Tarping time should be considered in the rate.
