GlossaryN EndorsementCDL Tanker

Tanker Endorsement

A tanker endorsement is a CDL endorsement that allows a driver to operate certain commercial vehicles transporting liquids or gases in tanks.

What you actually need to know

A tanker endorsement may be needed even when the freight is not hazardous. The trigger depends on container type, capacity, and how the cargo is transported.

If the cargo is hazardous, hazmat requirements may also apply. Do not assume tanker and hazmat are the same endorsement.

Owner-operators should verify endorsement requirements before booking loads involving bulk liquids, totes, or tank containers.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • Tanker and hazmat are not the same.
  • Non-hazardous liquid freight can still require tanker knowledge.
  • Endorsement requirements can affect insurance and load eligibility.
