Carrier Type
Carrier type describes how a motor carrier operates and what kind of freight or service it provides.
What you actually need to know
Your carrier type affects registration, insurance, compliance, and broker expectations. For-hire interstate carriers usually need MC Authority, while private carriers or intrastate-only carriers may have different requirements.
Do not guess on carrier classification. Your MCS-150, authority application, insurance, and broker packet should all tell the same story.
If your operation changes later, update your records. A mismatch between your public record and actual operation can create problems.
Common mistakes / confusions
- For-hire and private carrier are different.
- Interstate and intrastate are different.
