SAFER

SAFER is FMCSA's public carrier lookup system where authority status, USDOT information, and safety snapshots can be reviewed.

What you actually need to know

Brokers often look at SAFER before onboarding a new carrier. They want to see that the carrier name, MC number, USDOT number, and authority status look real and consistent.

SAFER can show whether authority is active, inactive, or pending, but it should be checked alongside insurance filings and other FMCSA records. Do not book freight while your authority is not actually active.

New carriers should learn how to look themselves up. If your SAFER profile has mismatched information, fix it before trying to send broker packets.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • SAFER is a lookup system, not an authority application.
  • A visible USDOT record does not mean your MC authority is active.
  • Brokers may reject carriers with incomplete or inconsistent public records.
