CSA Score

CSA is FMCSA's safety measurement system that uses inspections, violations, and crash data to identify motor carriers needing safety attention.

What you actually need to know

New carriers start with little inspection history, which means early inspections matter. A few avoidable violations can shape how brokers and enforcement systems view your operation.

CSA is connected to roadside behavior: hours of service, driver fitness, vehicle maintenance, unsafe driving, controlled substances, hazmat, and crash indicators. Good paperwork and good pre-trip habits both matter.

You cannot buy a good CSA profile. You build it by running legally, keeping documents clean, maintaining equipment, and correcting issues quickly.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • CSA is not a license.
  • No score does not always mean good safety; it can mean not enough data yet.
  • One inspection can matter a lot for a very new carrier.
