UCR (Unified Carrier Registration)

UCR is an annual federal-state registration fee that interstate motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders pay based on fleet size.

What you actually need to know

UCR is administered by a board of state agencies but it's a single federal-style filing — pay once, you're registered across all participating states. The fee is tiered by fleet size; a new owner-operator with 1–2 trucks pays the lowest tier (around $50–$70 per year for the 2026 schedule).

You renew UCR every calendar year. The renewal window opens October 1 and closes December 31 for the following year. Miss it and your authority can be suspended in participating states.

UCR is separate from your MC authority fee, your USDOT registration, and your state IFTA/IRP fees. It's its own annual line item.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • UCR is annual. MC authority and USDOT registration are not. Don't conflate them.
  • "Filing service" packages often bundle UCR for $150–$300 per year. The actual UCR fee is $50–$70.
  • Intrastate-only carriers in some states still owe UCR if they cross state lines occasionally — even once a year.
