Hot Shot
Hot shot trucking usually means hauling smaller or time-sensitive loads with a pickup truck and trailer instead of a full class-8 tractor-trailer.
What you actually need to know
Hot shot can have lower equipment cost than class-8 trucking, but authority, insurance, cargo, weight, and log rules still matter.
A hot shot carrier may still need USDOT, MC authority, insurance, ELD/HOS compliance, IFTA or IRP depending on weight and operation, and proper trailer registration.
Payload math matters. A cheaper truck is not useful if you cannot legally haul the freight weight brokers offer.
Common mistakes / confusions
- Hot shot does not automatically mean no CDL or no authority.
- Pickup plus trailer weight can trigger commercial rules.
- Insurance can still be expensive for new authority.
