Hazmat Endorsement
A hazmat endorsement (H) is an add-on to your CDL that lets you legally haul hazardous materials — fuel, chemicals, explosives, and anything requiring placards.
What you actually need to know
To add hazmat to your CDL, you take a written knowledge test at your state DMV, then complete a TSA Threat Assessment (a fingerprint-based background check). The TSA check takes 4–6 weeks and costs around $86.
The background check disqualifies people with certain felony convictions in the prior 7 years. Check the TSA's disqualifying offense list before paying for the application.
Hazmat-endorsed drivers typically earn $0.05–$0.15 more per mile and have access to dedicated hazmat freight lanes. For new owner-operators, hazmat is usually not worth pursuing in year one — insurance premiums for hazmat-rated authority are significantly higher.
Common mistakes / confusions
- The endorsement is on your CDL, but to haul hazmat as a carrier you also need hazmat-specific insurance and your MC authority filing must reflect it.
- The TSA background check has to be renewed every 5 years (or earlier if you change states).
- Just because you have the endorsement doesn't mean you can haul any hazmat. Specific classes (explosives, radioactive) require additional carrier-side certifications.
