EIN (Employer Identification Number)

An EIN is a 9-digit federal tax ID number that the IRS issues to your business, the way an SSN identifies an individual.

What you actually need to know

You need an EIN to open a business bank account, hire employees, file business tax returns as an LLC or corporation, and apply for MC authority. Sole proprietors without employees can technically operate on their SSN — but every owner-operator we work with gets an EIN for separation reasons.

You apply for an EIN free through irs.gov. If you have an SSN, it takes 5 minutes online. If you have an ITIN (no SSN), you can't use the online tool — you fax or mail Form SS-4 and wait 4–8 weeks for processing.

EIN never expires. One business, one EIN, forever (unless you change entity structure).

Common mistakes / confusions

  • EIN is not your SSN. They're separate; you can — and should — have both as a business owner.
  • Filing services charge $50–$200 to "get you an EIN." It's free at irs.gov.
  • If you've lost your EIN, you can call the IRS Business & Specialty Tax Line (800-829-4933) to recover it.
