GlossaryReturn Load

Backhaul

Backhaul is a return or repositioning load that helps a truck move back toward home or a stronger freight market.

What you actually need to know

A backhaul can protect profit by reducing empty miles. It may pay less than the outbound load, but it can be better than deadheading hundreds of miles.

Good dispatch planning looks at the round trip, not just the first load. A high outbound rate to a weak market can become a bad week without a decent backhaul.

New carriers should learn which destinations have poor reload options before chasing one attractive posted rate.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • Backhaul is not always low quality; it is part of network planning.
  • A high first load can still produce a bad round trip.
  • Deadhead should be priced into load decisions.
