Glossary1099Nonemployee Compensation

1099-NEC

1099-NEC is an IRS form used to report nonemployee compensation paid to independent contractors.

What you actually need to know

Owner-operators and independent contractors may receive 1099-NEC forms from brokers, carriers, or businesses that paid them. The form reports gross payments, not your net profit.

You still need to track expenses. A 1099 number can look large, but fuel, insurance, maintenance, tolls, factoring, parking, and repairs can reduce taxable profit.

If you hire contractors, you may have your own 1099 reporting responsibilities. Get tax help before assuming the broker handles everything.

Common mistakes / confusions

  • 1099 income is not take-home pay.
  • Receiving a 1099 does not automatically prove someone is properly classified.
  • You may owe quarterly estimated taxes.
